2. Ditch Formality.
The most important part of writing great copy is making it resonate with your consumers.
You should write as if you were speaking to a friend over coffee.
Let’s be honest, when was the last time you saw a contract and thought to yourself “Oh boy! I can’t wait to read this!”?
Cut the mumbo jumbo!
Have a conversational tone, keep it professional, but ditch the formality.
3. Create a Buying Environment
The buying environment is the mood you want your readers to be in while reading your copy.
Everything in the copy from the images used and their captions to the font you decide to use all contribute to your buying environment.
The type of buying environment you want to set up with your copywriting will depend on your services and who your readers are. You have to appeal to the reader.
Get them in the mood of saying “Yes”.
If you’re selling a new phone to techies you might want to go into how powerful its processor is and all its complexities.
Whereas if you’re selling it to the average consumer then writing about how great its camera looks or its general ease of use might be a better idea.
4. Understand the Product
If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will.
Before you can convince others to buy your product you must first be sold on it yourself.
Become an expert on what you’re selling. If you’re writing for a client ask as many questions about the product as possible.
Your expertise and confidence in the product WILL show through your writing, and readers will have more respect for you and be more confident about their purchase.
5. Understand the Consumer
This sort of goes back to the example I made on the third point. You have to know who you are selling to. Know what they need, know their problems and show how your product can solve those problems.
Research by reading customer reviews on products that attract the same audience on sites like Amazon.
You must think like the consumer, speak like the consumer, become the consumer.
Anticipate their questions and answer them before they even get to ask them. The best way to sell anything is to find out what your consumers want. Then show how your product helps them get it. Do this and you’ll see just how great an impact relating to the consumer will have on your sales.
6. Be Honest
Seriously, don’t try to trick people into believing what you don’t believe.
Make your product seem exciting not because you have to but because you truly believe that it is something great.
Don’t make crazy over exaggerated claims, stay grounded and truthful.
Lying might work in the short term but in the long term you’ll lose credibility and respect from your consumers and it’ll be harder and harder to get people to trust you.
Don’t be the boy who cried: – Wooooolf!
7. The Power of the First Sentence
If the most important thing that you must do in your copy is to grab your reader’s attention, then your first sentence is the most important sentence in the entire copy.
The first sentence must be short. It must fuel your readers’ curiosity. The whole purpose of the first sentence is to provoke the interest. If the consumer doesn’t care for the first sentence, they won’t care for your copy.
You could make it a question or make it something that your consumer can relate to. Keep it short and make sure it’s engaging.
Say just enough to get them curious to read the rest of your copy.
8. Use “You”
Stop talking about yourself so much.
The product is being sold to the consumer.
In your copywriting material focus on what benefits the consumer gets by purchasing your service.
The word “You” is powerful, it suddenly makes everything personal, now you’re speaking directly to the reader instead of a large audience.
Keep the use of words like “I” or “We” at a minimum. They can break the readers’ immersion and instead of directly speaking to the reader you’re now talking to a broad audience about yourself.
Focus on how your reader will feel when they have the product, focus on how their desires will be fulfilled.
9. Increase Credibility
Give statistics, testimonials, and any other form of proof on your product. Your reader must know that your product works exactly as you say it does.
Make sure that by the end of your copy your reader has no doubt about the efficacy of your products because if they do, they probably won’t buy.
10. Appeal to Emotion
While providing statistics and logical reasons as to why your reader needs a product is crucial.
It is even more important to appeal to their emotions.
People make decisions almost entirely based on their feelings and afterward they justify the decision with logic.
So it is rational to say that making your reader feel the way you want them to feel about your product/service should be the primary focus of your copywriting.

11. Make Your Consumers Want to Belong
Your consumer should feel special for owning your product.
Think about why people buy Lamborghinis when any other car can do the same job. People buy Lambos because it makes them feel like they are a part of a special group.
We all want to belong.
Find something that consumers who buy your products have in common and use that to your advantage.
Make your consumer feel like they would be part of a unique group of people if they buy your product.
12. Get Your Consumers To Take Action ASAP
If you give the consumer too much time to decide whether to buy your product or not, chances are, they won’t.
The impact that your copy had on them the moment they read it would disappear and be forgotten.
Get them to take action the second they finish reading that copy.
Incentivize by providing a special offer if they order within a certain time frame. You know, like those TV commercials who say “Call now and get two for the price of one!”. Yeah, you want to do something similar.
Give them a good reason to buy your product ASAP.
13. Focus on Benefits not Features
A good idea would actually be to list both. But a benefit has much more impact than a feature.
The benefit is the answer to “what does this feature do for me?”. For example, if I were selling a computer, a 1 terabyte hard drive would be a feature. Its benefit would be that you can store a large number of photos and files in just one hard drive without your computer going bonkers.
Many consumers might not have any idea what you’re talking about when reading the features of a product, but beyond any doubt, they should understand its benefits.
That’s why the larger focus should be on listing benefits instead of features.
14. Give the consumer instant gratification
Readers should feel like they are getting something as soon as possible after they make that purchase.
This can be achieved by assuring that the product they ordered will be delivered quickly and giving a time frame.
You don’t want the reader to think they’ll have to wait a long time before they get their item or they’ll start thinking about finding other options.
15. Keep the consumer engaged all throughout your copy
Keep them guessing.
Your copy should keep them entertained and interested. Build suspense around the product, make the consumer curious, make them so curious and intrigued that they just have to buy the product.
Make your copy easy-to-read. Use power words and sub-headings. Write in small chunks. Readers will appreciate it.
Use bucket brigades – words and phrases that keep people on your page.
Engage the reader’s mind and keep them thinking about the product until it’s in their hands.
16. Tell a Story
One of the most powerful ways of keeping the consumer engaged is to tell a story.
A story can create an emotional bond that will keep the consumer listening to your message.
Using a story lets you easily impact the emotions you want the consumer to have while reading your copy, whether it be excited or shocked.
This greatly contributes to the buying environment of your copy.
You should use stories to relate to your consumers and start talking their language. The consumer will be engaged and is more likely to buy if you tell a good story.
17. Have a strong call to action
This can make or break your copy.
You NEED to have a call-to-action. It should stand out from the other elements of your copy. It should be concise and alluring, clear and striking, it should say exactly what will happen if the consumer takes the action you want them to take.
For example, if you’re trying to get the consumer to download a piece of software instead of just having a button that says “Download” make the button say “Get (software name) now!”. This tells the consumer exactly what will happen if they click the button, they’ll get the software.
18. Forget about the old Sales Pitch
People like to buy, but they hate being sold.
If your reader at any point feels like you’re trying too hard to sell them, they won’t buy, it’s that simple.
Don’t be aggressive, stay conversational and relaxed, imagine you’re telling a friend about a great product that you love.
Keep anything that relates to the actual purchase of the product at the end when you’ve already grabbed the consumer and have fully convinced them through your copy that they should hire your services.
19. Be Creative
Creative copy will entice consumers and make your product seem special and unique compared to other similar products.
Remember the consumer must never feel bored while reading your copy. If it’s similar to thousands of other copy pieces they’ve seen that’s exactly what will happen and you’ll lose the sale.
Your copy should be like a slippery slide that the consumer just cannot get off until they’ve reached the end.
20. Use images, infographics, and videos.
Аn image is worth a thousand words.
You can easily transfer emotions, tell a story or provoke a person with an image. Images bring your content to live. No one likes to read long articles without a single photo. Moreover, images increase conversion dramatically.
