How long has butylfuel™ been in business?

butylfuel™ LLC was founded in 1991 as Environmental Energy Inc. by David Ramey. In 2006, David sold a controlling interest in the company to a local investor, Jim Grote. In 2007, the company name was changed to butylfuel™LLC to reflect a new focus on biobutanol as a renewable biofuel. Since that time, the Grote family has invested heavily in R&D and in building the pilot plant in Gahanna. In 2010, Joel Stone joined the company as CEO, and our strategic focus has shifted to both renewable chemicals and alternative fuels.

What new products is butylfuel™ interested in?

Our core products are butyric acid, biobutanol, and a co-product to biobutanol, acetone. Butyric acid is a precursor feedstock to cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), an important plastic for high-impact applications such as hard hats, safety glasses and blister packaging. CAB is also used as a rheology additive for automotive coatings and fingernail polish. Butyric acid is used to make herbicides, and as an animal feed ingredient to improve gastric strength in poultry and swine. It’s also used in fragrances and flavors. Butanol is used extensively in paints, coatings and adhesives as both a solvent and a feedstock to derivative products used as solvents and monomers. Long term, our technology platform has the potential to manufacture a wide range of carboxylic acids and C4 alcohols.

What types of jobs will butylfuel™ need in the future?

As we accelerate our technology development, we see a need for additional resources in R&D and engineering/plant scale up, as well as business development, accounting and administrative. We are an industrial biotechnology company, and we anticipate staffing needs in microbiology, chemistry and chemical engineering in particular. As we initiate construction of our first facility, we will begin staffing operationally with plant production personnel and management.
